Reference Checking Identifies Poor Performers |

Recruiting Trends reports that results of the 2005 Reference Checking Survey released by the Society of Human Resources Management reveals almost 40% of HR professionals over the past three years have increasingly spent more time on reference checking of potential employees. Results indicate 73% of respondents believe reference checking is somewhat very effective in identifying poor performers. "With new technologies, reference and background checking has become easier to conduct and increasingly more important to organizations that want to get a complete picture of the job candidates they consider hiring," says Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, President and CEO of SHRM. Organizations are often asked to provide reference information on former employees, but, due to liability fears, 54% have policies not to provide references. Yet, 75% of HR professionals believe they would share more information about current/former employees if there were laws protecting them from legal liability. |
